Asian chip stocks tried to recover from Tuesday's rout, but the gains faded in some markets. Seoul's Kospi rose more than 2% early, then closed down 0.44% at 6,008.81, its sixth straight daily loss (Seoul Economic Daily, AP).

Where markets stood

Reuters said the MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.5% during the session, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix up more than 2% at one point. By the close, Seoul Economic Daily reported Samsung flat and SK Hynix down 1.66%, as foreign investors sold a net 1.18 trillion won of shares. AP said Japan's Nikkei 225 finished down less than 0.1% and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.6%. AFP said Taipei also bounced early, and that Hong Kong, Sydney, Wellington and Manila fell.

A Fed signal helped sentiment

AFP said hopes that the Federal Reserve could avoid further hikes next year gave stocks a lift after New York Fed President John Williams told Bloomberg News, "I haven't changed my view that it may be appropriate to have one more rate hike," and "I don't think at this time I have any reason to believe that we would need to do more" after that. Anadolu reported the same comments. Read how the selloff began in our Tuesday Asia story and chip selloff reaches Wall Street, and Waller's view in our Waller story.
