Alcoa and Travelers both reported third-quarter results that beat Wall Street's estimates, but their shares moved in opposite directions before the open: Alcoa rose more than 2% and Travelers fell about 4% (CNBC).

Alcoa

Alcoa said net income was $483 million, or $1.81 a share, compared with $232 million, or 88 cents, a year earlier, on sales of $3.7 billion, up 24% (Alcoa, WSJ). Adjusted net income was $485 million, or $1.82 a share, Alcoa said. The company said results were helped by improved production costs, higher alumina prices and mark-to-market gains on energy contracts and its Ma'aden shares, partly offset by lower aluminum prices and shipments, and that it expects to maintain strong operational performance in the fourth quarter. CNBC said the stock rose on a rebound in its alumina business.

Travelers

Seeking Alpha said Travelers' core income rose 13% to $9.18 per diluted share from $8.14 a year earlier, helped by favorable reserve development and higher net investment income, while revenue was hit by its personal insurance unit. CNBC said revenue was $12.48 billion, and that analysts polled by LSEG had expected core earnings of $7.42 a share on revenue of $11.38 billion. CNBC said the shares fell 4% before the open despite the beat. Premarket moves can change once trading opens.
