CoreWeave shares fell about 16% on Wednesday while the yields on its bonds jumped to near 15%, feeding worries that technology companies are borrowing too heavily for the AI build-out (CNBC, Quartz).
The bonds
CNBC reports the yield to maturity on CoreWeave's 9.625% bond due in 2032 was at 14.8% and on its 9.75% bond due in 2031 near 14.9%. Bond yields rise as prices fall. Investor Chamath Palihapitiya pointed to the 2032 bond's yield on X late Tuesday, and Elon Musk replied "yikes" (CNBC, Investing.com, Bloomberg Law). Investing.com had the stock down 13% earlier in the day.
Others hit
CNBC says Oracle shares fell nearly 7%, Nebius dropped 9% and Dell fell 10%. Luis Alvarado of Wells Fargo Investment Institute told CNBC the "era of easy money" seen in the first nine months of the year is starting to fade, and investors are demanding more compensation for risk. CNBC cites JPMorgan estimates that hyperscalers will spend about $800 billion this year on AI infrastructure.
