Five things to know before the open.

1. Bank of America misses after a $1.2 billion fine

Bank of America reported third-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.08 a share, below the $1.10 analysts expected, on revenue of $30.0 billion, which met expectations (Investing.com). The Wall Street Journal also said the profit missed. The results include a $1.2 billion charge tied to the anti-money-laundering penalties announced Tuesday. Reported net income was $6.9 billion, or 91 cents a share, down from $8.3 billion a year earlier, and Investing.com said the shares fell about 3.7% in premarket trading. Morgan Stanley, BlackRock and State Street also report before the open (Reuters). Background: our First Light story.

2. The CPI report lands at 8:30

Economists expect September consumer prices up 3.6% from a year earlier, from 3.4% in August (WSJ, Reuters). Reuters says the core index is forecast to rise 0.2% on the month. Some outlets we cited yesterday had a 3.7% forecast; see our CPI preview. The Journal says an unexpectedly hot reading could challenge bets that the Fed waits until December to raise rates again.

3. Futures edge up as chips steady

At 5:41 AM ET, Reuters had Dow futures up 234 points, or 0.45%, S&P 500 futures up 0.21% and Nasdaq 100 futures down 0.03%. Nvidia was up 0.2% while Micron fell 1.3% and Intel 1.1% (Reuters). The Journal said memory-chip makers such as Sandisk and Micron remain under pressure over Chinese competition. ASML's results helped sentiment: see our ASML story.

4. Europe rises, Seoul slips

The pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.48% at 638.07 by 0857 GMT, with technology shares up 1.2% and ASML up 2.4% (Reuters). South Korea's Kospi closed down 0.44% at 6,008.81, its sixth straight loss, after rising more than 2% early (Seoul Economic Daily). More in our Asia story.

5. Oil, rates and the Fed

Brent was around $106 a barrel in early trading, with Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia in focus (Reuters, CNBC, WSJ); see our oil story. The 10-year Treasury yield slipped a basis point to 5.21% (Anadolu Agency). New York Fed President John Williams said one more rate hike this year may be appropriate but he sees no need for hikes in 2027 (Reuters). Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin speaks and the Fed's Beige Book is due late in the day (Reuters). Last night's Dusk Ledger has Tuesday's close.
