Wall Street slid through the afternoon as a hot inflation report, higher bond yields and a slump in AI-linked shares pulled stocks toward their worst day since June, AP reported.
The afternoon numbers
As of 2:15 PM ET, AP had the S&P 500 down 1.3%, on track for a fifth loss in the six days since its record high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 218 points, or 0.4%, and the Nasdaq composite was 1.9% lower. In the morning the market opened lower and the odds of an October Fed hike jumped.
Yields and tech
AP said stocks felt pressure from rising bond yields after the inflation report. CNBC said the tech sector brought the market down, and that the weakness hit shakier stocks outside the Magnificent Seven hardest. Our story on the day's AI-debt selloff is here.
